I don't know why, but the opening of this show took me so long to put together. I haven't been feeling or sounding great lately so I'm sure that has something to do with it, but here we are! Today we have a new tune from new friends, and a deep dive during which I got to use a bunch of different microphones. Let's get to it!
Pat plays new music from Could You Not? (3:15), takes a deep dive into how to record your own podcast (8:21), and gets a Flyers Update from The Captain (56:27).

Thanks to our new friends for the tune! Get Backpedal here (Apple) and connect with the band on Instagram here! Tell em Pat said hello (but maybe leave out the mouth riff)!
How to Record Your Own Podcast
I have had this on my list for a long time, and I am very happy to finally share it with you. I used several different devices to demonstrate that, while you can buy fancy equipment, it is not totally necessary. Or maybe you think it is after hearing how I sounded. Here is all that I used to record today (minus my phone and laptop). Prices are current as of March 26, 2025.
Audio interface: Audient EVO-8 - $199
Microphone stand: discontinued; here's a similar one - $19.95
Counterweight (for heavier mics): On-Stage Stands CW - $16.95
Dynamic booster: Klark Teknik CT-1 - $26.90
Show microphone: Zoom ZDM-1 - $49.99
And now for the different microphones we used.
I won't mention the cubicle panels either, because I looked up where to buy them before I was given these and I could not find a definitive answer. You'll need to have better luck, I suppose! And I guess I should rank these, or at least pick the best one.
Of the choices here, I would recommend the Shure SM58. It is relatively inexpensive. It is lightweight. You should not get a ton of noise (if any) during recording if you hold it. The only other equipment you really need to use it is a mixer or audio interface. And the Focusrite Vocaster One is currently on sale for $79.99. You can get XLR cables for like $11 usually, so you can spend ~$190 and have very good sound quality right away.
Or if you just want to grab a USB mic so you can plug-and-play? The Audio-Technica ATR2100x is on sale for $48.95 on Amazon right now. So for under $50, you can start recording your show in a few days. Give em hell!
Oh! Also you should download this free program called The Levelator. Export your wav file, open The Levelator, and drop the file into it. What I do while editing: remove noise (that's why I leave an extra second or two at the beginning of each voice track), export, level. Import the new track into Audacity, remove noise again, then amplify (-6). You don't have to do exactly that, but that is what works for my show. In any case, The Levelator has saved me so many hours of editing so I highly recommend it.
Flyers
Of course the Flyers fired their head coach as soon as I started editing this week's update. Of course they did! So I suppose that's a spoiler for next week, but thank you for dropping some knowledge on us as always, Captain!
🎤
And that, as we say, is that! Thanks for joining me today. I hope you enjoyed this lesson in podcasting, and if you need any help? I am a few clicks or taps away. Next week we'll probably talk baseball, and we'll definitely have a new tune. Until then, don't do anything I wouldn't do!
Crap open a cold one!
